She teaches creative writing at Columbia University. Her first novel, So Many Olympic Exertions, was published by Kaya Press in 2017. It was a VCU Cabell First Novelist Award Finalist. Her second book, Clam Down (One World), based on her brief stint as the Paris Review Daily's "mollusk correspondent," was published in June 2025. She is a National Book Foundation 5 under 35 Awardee. Her collection of poems Star Lake was published in 2022 by The Song Cave. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, A Public Space, The American Poetry Review, jubilat, and elsewhere. She received an MFA in poetry from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she has also been a Visiting Assistant Professor of Poetry, and a doctorate in Creative Writing and Literature from the University of Denver. She has also taught in the Creative Writing Program at NYU. Apart from her work as a writer and teacher, she has also been an associate producer on the PBS documentary series Frontline and American Experience. Collins’s courses include the Intermediate Poetry Workshop and Introduction to Creative Writing. She has previously taught the Advanced Poetry Workshop as the Grace Hazard Conkling Writer-in-Residence. Abu Toha is also the founder of the Edward Said Library in Gaza, which Israel destroyed. She fell in love with photography through working with Joel and studied film history with Gil Perez, and poetry with Tom Lux, Jean Valentine and Jane Cooper. She received her MFA in Photography at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, receiving the top MFA prize for 2D work in 1992. She was a Professor of Studio Art at UNC, Chapel Hill or 27 years, where she built the darkroom and taught Conceptual Photography, Body Imaging, Collaborative Practices, Drawing, Collage and Graduate Seminars. She has held artist residencies in Canada, France, Japan, and most recently in the U.S. at Caltech and UC, Irvine.She has exhibited her work internationally, and is in many collections, including the Queens Museum, the National Library of France, the Library of Congress, the Nasher Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. She has had over 40 solo shows across the U.S., and in Japan, Canada, France, and the Netherlands. Her work has been included in over 150 group exhibitions around the world, including in the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time’s Art and Science Collide at Caltech; the Los Angeles Center of Photography; The Wallace Arts Trust in New Zealand, John Jay College’s Shiva Gallery, Franklin Furnace, Governor’s Island Art Fair, Humble Arts Foundation, and White Box in New York; IoDeposito Gallery in Treviso, Italy; The Carnegie Center in Cincinnati; the Rachel Carson Center in Germany; Form Gallery in Australia; URDLA in Lyon, France; Whitworth Gallery in Manchester, UK; the University of Basel in Switzerland,  and many others. Slavick is the author of two monographs - Bomb After Bomb: A Violent Cartography (with a foreword by Howard Zinn) and After Hiroshima (with an essay by James Elkins); a collection of surrealist poetry - Cameramouth; and Holding History in Our Hand, commissioned for the 75th commemoration of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and commissioned as a film for the 80th commemoration last year. She is the founder of SWANS: Slow War Against the Nuclear State, a collective of 8 women artists addressing nuclear issues - with the exhibition FALLOUT currently up at Pitzer College. She is also the co-founder of the Collaborative Collage Collective and serves on the advisory board for the Atomic Photographers Guild. She is a poet, artist, curator, critic, activist, educator and pacifist. There is no limit to seating for family and friends and no RSVP required for in-person attendance. From 1:00 - 2:00 PM, all are welcome to join for a celebratory reception with bites and beverages in the Heimbold Atrium. The readings will begin at 2:00 PM with a congratulatory address by a faculty member. Graduate readers will then follow. Readers will be limited to 5 minutes each. We will have a full lineup, so please be conscientious of others and practice yourself to within the time limit.
